The XP 13-inch × 11-inch FMF search coil is XP’s largest standard FMF coil for detectorists who want to cover open ground more efficiently. Its 34 × 28 cm search area is well suited to expansive fields, beaches, pastures, fairgrounds and relic sites where targets are spread over a large area.

This coil is not intended to replace the 9-inch or 11-inch everywhere. It gives your XP detector a dedicated large-area option for locations where ground coverage and depth potential matter more than minimum weight or tight-site maneuverability.

Why Choose the XP 13" × 11" FMF Coil?

Every sweep of a search coil examines a section of ground. A larger coil covers a wider path, which can reduce the number of passes required to search a large site properly. That advantage becomes noticeable on beaches, farm fields, pastures and other open locations.

More Ground per Sweep Search broad areas more efficiently than with XP’s smaller round FMF coils.
Strong Depth Potential Its larger detection field can provide an advantage on certain deeper coins, relics and larger targets in suitable ground.
Full FMF Performance Use XP’s simultaneous multi-frequency programs or DEUS II single-frequency choices from approximately 4–45 kHz.
Wireless XP Design The coil communicates wirelessly with compatible XP controllers and audio components without a coil cable wrapped around the stem.
Bart’s Take

If you mainly hunt large fields, beaches, pastures or open relic sites, the 13-inch × 11-inch coil earns its place. It covers more ground than the smaller coils and can provide an advantage on deeper or widely scattered targets. I would still choose a smaller coil for dense iron, heavy trash, brush and tight locations.

Best Places to Use the 13" × 11" Coil

  • Farm fields: Cover large cultivated areas where coins and relics may be widely scattered.
  • Pastures: Search open grass more efficiently with fewer overlapping sweeps.
  • Beaches: Cover dry sand and broad stretches of wet sand where obstacles and trash are limited.
  • Large relic sites: Work military camps, gathering areas and expansive home-site surroundings.
  • Fairgrounds and large parks: Search open sections away from dense modern trash.
  • Low-trash locations: Take advantage of the larger detection field without several targets responding simultaneously.

When a Smaller Coil Is Better

The largest coil is not automatically the best coil for every location. The 13-inch × 11-inch coil weighs more and sees a larger volume of ground. In locations containing numerous nails, pull tabs or other closely spaced targets, that larger detection field may allow several objects to respond during the same sweep.

A 9-inch coil is generally easier to maneuver around thick iron, brush and obstacles. The 11-inch coil provides a more balanced everyday combination of coverage, weight and separation. Choose the large coil when its open-ground advantages match the site.

XP FMF Multi-Frequency Technology

XP’s FMF technology processes multiple frequencies simultaneously, giving compatible detectors flexible performance across different target conductivities and changing soil conditions.

When paired with an XP DEUS II controller, the D3428FMF also provides 49 selectable single-frequency choices across approximately 4–45 kHz. Available individual frequencies, programs and settings depend on the detector and controller paired with the coil.

Compare XP’s Standard FMF Coil Sizes

FMF Coil Approximate Weight Main Advantage Best-Suited Locations
9-Inch Round 345 g Separation, low weight and control Dense iron, trash, woods, foundations and tight sites
11-Inch Round 470 g Balanced everyday performance Parks, fields, beaches and mixed locations
13-Inch × 11-Inch 570 g Maximum open-ground coverage Fields, beaches, pastures, fairgrounds and large relic sites

XP 13" × 11" FMF Coil Specifications

Manufacturing Made in France

What Comes with the D3428FMF Coil?

  • XP 13-inch × 11-inch FMF wireless search coil
  • Protective coil cover
  • XP lower stem
  • Coil mounting screw and hardware
  • XP five-year warranty coverage

The supplied lower stem allows you to leave the larger coil assembled on its own lower shaft. This makes changing between XP coils faster and avoids repeatedly removing the coil hardware.

DEUS II, ICON and ICON-X Compatibility

The D3428FMF was developed for the XP DEUS II platform. XP’s ICON and ICON-X detectors also support the DEUS II FMF coil ecosystem, but the controller determines the programs, individual-frequency choices, settings and expected system runtime.

ICON and ICON-X owners: Contact Bart before ordering so we can verify your lower-stem and detector configuration. The coil itself is waterproof to 20 meters, but the complete ICON or ICON-X detector has a shallower system waterproof rating.

Underwater and Beach Use

The coil itself is waterproof to approximately 20 meters or 66 feet. DEUS II underwater operation requires XP’s appropriate underwater antenna and compatible waterproof audio equipment.

Although the large coil can cover open beach sand efficiently, its additional water resistance and size require more effort when sweeping underwater. Customers who spend most of their time submerged may prefer a smaller coil that is easier to move through the water.

XP 13" × 11" FMF Coil Frequently Asked Questions

What is the biggest advantage of the 13-inch × 11-inch coil?

Its primary advantage is ground coverage. The larger search area allows you to examine more open ground with each properly overlapped sweep.

Is the large coil always deeper than the 9-inch or 11-inch coil?

No coil is guaranteed to be deeper in every location. The larger coil can provide an advantage on certain deeper or larger targets in clean ground, but soil conditions, target size, settings, sweep technique and nearby metal all affect detection depth.

Is the 13-inch × 11-inch coil good in heavy iron?

It can be used around iron, but a 9-inch coil is generally easier to maneuver and isolate targets with when desirable objects are positioned close to numerous nails.

How much does the coil weigh?

XP lists the 13-inch × 11-inch FMF coil at approximately 570 grams, or about 20.1 ounces.

Does the coil include a lower stem?

Yes. XP supplies the coil with its protective cover, lower stem and mounting hardware.

How long does the battery last?

XP rates the wireless coil battery for up to approximately 20 hours. Runtime varies according to the program, frequencies, temperature and battery condition.

Can this coil be used underwater?

The coil is waterproof to approximately 20 meters. Underwater detecting also requires the appropriate antenna, controller and waterproof audio equipment, and every component must remain within its own rated depth.

Does it work with ICON and ICON-X?

XP states that ICON and ICON-X support the DEUS II FMF coil ecosystem. Available programs and frequency controls depend on the detector controller being used.
