Does the XP ICON & ICON-X Have a Bottle Cap Filter? How to Set It Up & Use It

Does the XP ICON or XP ICON-X have a bottle cap filter? Yes—and after testing the feature myself, I found it can be very useful once you understand how XP designed it to work.

One thing that can be confusing is that you will not find a separate menu simply labeled “Bottle Cap Filter.” Instead, the XP ICON and ICON-X use the Notch system together with the conductivity display to help identify and reject troublesome ferrous bottle caps.

In this guide I'll show you exactly where to find the setting, what I see on the conductivity bar when testing a steel bottle cap, and the Notch settings I recommend starting with.

Written and tested by Bart Davis — Owner of Big Boys Hobbies

Authorized XP Metal Detectors Dealer

I tested this XP ICON and ICON-X bottle cap setup myself so I could show exactly what happens on the conductivity bar and how I recommend using the Notch settings in real hunting conditions. The photos and video below demonstrate what to look for when dealing with troublesome steel bottle caps.

If you're researching either detector, you can also see all of our XP ICON and XP ICON-X metal detector packages here.

XP ICON and ICON-X bottle cap filter
Yes, the XP ICON and ICON-X have a ferrous bottle cap filtering feature built into the Notch system.

Does the XP ICON Have a Bottle Cap Filter?

Yes. Both the XP ICON and ICON-X can help identify and reject ferrous bottle caps.

The important thing to understand is that XP does not give you a traditional menu item called “Bottle Cap Filter.” Instead, accessing the Notch settings activates the ferrous bottle cap filtering function.

The ICON also gives you another valuable clue by showing the target response across its conductivity bar.

How Does the XP ICON Identify a Ferrous Bottle Cap?

Ferrous bottle caps can fool a metal detector because their shape and composition can sometimes make them sound much better than ordinary iron.

During my testing, a ferrous bottle cap can produce two separate responses on the conductivity bar:

  • A lower conductivity response at approximately 10
  • A second response higher on the conductivity scale around 60–70

Seeing those two areas respond at the same time can be a strong indication that the target under your coil is a ferrous bottle cap rather than a good non-ferrous target.

Ferrous bottle caps can display two separate conductivity segments—one near 10 and another around 60–70.

How to Turn On the XP ICON and ICON-X Bottle Cap Filter

Here is how I access and use the bottle cap filtering feature on the XP ICON or ICON-X:

  1. Use an FMF multi-frequency program. The bottle cap filtering feature is designed to operate in multi-frequency mode.
  2. Press the Settings button and navigate to the DISC / Discrimination setting.
  3. From the discrimination setting, access the detector's Notch adjustment.
  4. Once you enter the Notch function, the ICON's ferrous bottle cap filtering feature becomes active.
  5. Sweep over the suspected bottle cap several times and watch the conductivity bar at the top of the display.
  6. Look for the characteristic response around 10 together with another response around 60–70.
  7. Adjust your Notch setting to reject the lower bottle cap conductivity area if desired.

What Notch Setting Should You Use for Bottle Caps?

XP provides several possibilities depending on how much rejection you want:

  • 10
  • 10–15
  • 10–20

From my testing, I recommend starting conservatively and using only as much Notch as necessary for the site you are hunting.

If you're in a clean location with only an occasional bottle cap, you probably don't need to reject a large section of the conductivity range.

If you're hunting an old park, picnic area, sports field, fairground or another site covered with rusty bottle caps, widening the rejection range can make hunting much more enjoyable.

Important tip: Don't simply notch out the entire 60–70 range. Good targets can fall in that area. The higher response is useful because, together with the low response around 10, it helps identify the signature of a ferrous bottle cap.

Watch the entire conductivity bar instead of relying only on the large numerical Target ID.

Watch the XP ICON Bottle Cap Filter in Action

The easiest way to understand this feature is to actually watch the detector respond to a bottle cap.

In the video below, I demonstrate how the XP ICON and ICON-X identify ferrous bottle caps, what happens on the conductivity bar, and how to set up the detector to help reject them.

Watch my XP ICON / ICON-X Bottle Cap Filter video on YouTube

Why Does a Bottle Cap Show Two Conductivity Segments?

This is where the XP ICON's display gives you more information than simply looking at a single Target ID number.

A rusty steel bottle cap can produce a mixed response because the detector is seeing both its ferrous characteristics and a higher-conductive response created by the shape and properties of the cap.

The result can be activity in two very different areas of the conductivity bar—approximately 10 and 60–70.

If you're used to hunting strictly by the big Target ID number in the center of the display, this is a good reason to start watching the entire conductivity bar on the ICON.

The additional information can help you make a much better decision about whether you're looking at a good target or another rusty bottle cap.

Should You Use 10, 10–15 or 10–20?

There isn't one perfect setting for every hunting site.

If you only encounter an occasional bottle cap, I recommend starting with a narrow rejection range. This keeps more of the conductivity spectrum open and reduces the possibility of rejecting a desirable target.

When hunting a trashy park or picnic area loaded with crown caps and rusty bottle caps, expanding the rejected area toward 10–15 or 10–20 may make the machine much more pleasant to hunt with.

The rule I like to follow with discrimination and Notch is simple: use enough to solve the problem, but don't use more than you need.

Does the XP ICON Bottle Cap Filter Work in Single Frequency?

The bottle cap filtering feature is intended for FMF multi-frequency operation.

This is important because the XP ICON and XP ICON-X give you XP's FMF® Fast Multi Frequency technology as well as considerable control over how the detector operates.

If you have manually switched into a single-frequency configuration, keep that in mind if the bottle cap feature doesn't appear to behave the same way.

Is the XP ICON Good for Hunting Trashy Parks?

Yes. This is one of the areas where I think the ICON's target information can really help.

Parks, fairgrounds, sports fields, picnic areas and other heavily used public locations can contain enormous amounts of modern trash—especially aluminum, pull tabs and steel bottle caps.

The ICON combines several tools to help sort through those targets, including:

  • XP FMF® Fast Multi Frequency technology
  • Detailed Target ID information
  • The conductivity bar
  • Adjustable discrimination
  • A 28-segment Multi-Notch system
  • Ferrous bottle cap identification and filtering

Learning how these features work together is much better than simply cranking up discrimination and hoping the detector eliminates all the trash for you.

Don't Ignore the XP ICON Conductivity Bar

This bottle cap trick also demonstrates why the conductivity bar is such an important part of the ICON display.

Two targets can occasionally give you similar numerical IDs but provide very different information across the rest of the display.

As you gain experience with the XP ICON or ICON-X, pay attention to:

  • The numerical Target ID
  • The audio response
  • The conductivity bar
  • How stable the target is from different sweep directions

Using all of that information together can help you dig fewer junk targets without accidentally passing over the good stuff.

XP ICON and ICON-X Bottle Cap Filter FAQ

Does the XP ICON have a bottle cap filter?

Yes. The XP ICON has a ferrous bottle cap filtering feature that works through the detector's Notch system.

Does the XP ICON-X have a bottle cap filter?

Yes. The ICON-X also uses this bottle cap identification and filtering method.

Where is the bottle cap filter on the XP ICON?

You won't find a separate menu option labeled “Bottle Cap Filter.” Accessing the Notch settings activates the ferrous bottle cap filtering function.

What Target ID is a bottle cap on the XP ICON?

There isn't one Target ID that every bottle cap will produce. One important clue I look for is seeing two segments on the conductivity bar—approximately 10 and 60–70.

What should I Notch to reject bottle caps on the XP ICON?

Depending on your hunting conditions, the lower bottle-cap response can be rejected around 10, 10–15 or 10–20. I recommend starting with the smallest amount of Notch necessary and increasing it only if the site requires it.

Should I Notch out 60–70?

I would not automatically reject the entire 60–70 range just because a bottle cap can produce a response there. Desirable targets can also fall within that range. Use the combination of the low response, higher response, audio and overall target behavior to help identify the bottle cap.

Does the bottle cap filter work in single-frequency mode?

The ferrous bottle cap filtering feature is designed for multi-frequency operation.

Cheap Metal Detectors of 2026 Ranked | Huge Performance on any Budget

Best Cheap Metal Detectors of 2026: 5 Budget Detectors I’d Actually Recommend

If you are looking for the best cheap metal detector in 2026, you do not have to settle for a toy or a detector you will outgrow in a few months. Affordable metal detectors have become incredibly capable, and some of today's lower-priced machines offer technology and real-world performance that would have cost considerably more just a few years ago.

Modern budget-friendly detectors now offer features such as simultaneous multi-frequency, waterproof construction, wireless audio, adjustable recovery speed, advanced target ID, multiple search programs, and lightweight designs.

But price alone does not determine value. The detector I recommend most often is not necessarily the cheapest one on the shelf. I look at how easy it is to use, how stable it runs, what comes in the package, how it performs in different types of ground, and whether you are likely to outgrow it.

Last Updated: August 16, 2026 — This guide was substantially updated to reflect the latest 2026 detector availability, current models, hands-on recommendations, and our updated Top 5 rankings.

Written by Bart Davis — Owner of Big Boys Hobbies

Authorized Nokta, XP & Minelab Metal Detectors Dealer

I put this list together based on my hands-on experience with metal detectors, years of helping customers choose the right machine, and what I see every day at Big Boys Hobbies. My goal isn't simply to list the cheapest detectors available—it's to recommend affordable machines that I believe offer real performance, good value, easy operation, and enough capability that you won't immediately feel like you need to upgrade.

How I Ranked These Metal Detectors

I didn't rank these detectors based only on price or manufacturer specifications. I considered the things that matter most when I'm helping someone choose a detector:

  • Real-world detecting performance
  • Stability and target ID
  • How easy the detector is to learn and operate
  • Performance in parks, fields, beaches, trash and iron
  • Features and technology for the money
  • What is included with the detector
  • Whether a beginner will quickly outgrow it
  • Overall value for the money

ATTENTION: Before you buy a metal detector anywhere else, talk to us first. You will be glad you did!

My Top 5 Cheap Metal Detectors for 2026

  1. Best Overall Package: Nokta Triple Score Pro Pack
  2. Best Top-Tier Performance for the Money: XP ICON / ICON-X
  3. Best Lower-Cost Beginner Detector: Nokta Simplex Ultra
  4. Best Budget Minelab Multi-IQ Package: Minelab Vanquish 560 Pro Pack
  5. Best Affordable Turn-On-and-Go SMF Detector: Nokta Double Score

Bart's Quick Pick

If I had to recommend one affordable detector package to the widest range of people, I would choose the Nokta Triple Score Pro Pack.

It is easy to operate, stable, powerful, waterproof, and the Pro Pack gives you two coils and wireless headphones right out of the box. A beginner can turn it on and start hunting, but it has enough performance and adjustment for an experienced detectorist too.

1. Nokta Triple Score Pro Pack — Best Overall Cheap Metal Detector Package

My #1 pick for 2026 is the Nokta Triple Score Pro Pack.

If someone calls me and wants one detector that is easy to learn, extremely stable, powerful enough for serious hunting, waterproof, and already packaged with the accessories most people want, the Triple Score is very hard to beat.

One of the biggest reasons I rank the Triple Score #1 is that Nokta has done a very good job of giving it serious simultaneous multi-frequency performance without making the detector unnecessarily complicated.

You can turn it on, select the appropriate search mode, and go hunting. You do not have to spend your first several hunts buried in menus trying to figure out what everything does.

Why I Rank the Triple Score #1

  • Very stable operation in a wide range of hunting conditions
  • Easy enough for a beginner to learn quickly
  • Simultaneous Multi-Frequency (SMF) performance
  • Park, Field, Beach and Relic search modes
  • Fully waterproof for land, beach and shallow-water hunting
  • Adjustable recovery speed
  • Useful tone and discrimination adjustments without excessive menu complexity
  • Lightweight and comfortable to swing
  • Two search coils included in the Pro Pack
  • Wireless headphones included

The two included coils are another major advantage. The larger coil gives you excellent general-purpose coverage, while the smaller coil is extremely useful around trash, iron, tight areas and places where target separation becomes more important.

You do not have to buy another coil immediately after buying the detector.

Bart's Take: For the average person who asks me, “What detector should I buy that isn't crazy expensive but I won't immediately outgrow?” the Triple Score Pro Pack is probably the easiest answer on this entire list. It is one of the best combinations of stability, simplicity, performance and included equipment available for the money.

2. XP ICON & ICON-X — Top-Tier XP Performance Without the DEUS II Price

The XP ICON and ICON-X are my #2 picks, and these might be the most interesting detectors on this entire list from a pure performance-for-the-money standpoint.

The ICON gives you XP's FMF® Fast Multi Frequency technology, XP's extremely lightweight wireless design, and compatibility with key parts of the DEUS II FMF ecosystem at a much lower entry price than a full DEUS II setup.

More importantly, XP made the ICON considerably easier to navigate and set up.

Why the XP ICON Is Such a Big Deal

  • XP FMF® simultaneous multi-frequency technology
  • Extremely lightweight design
  • Fully wireless XP platform
  • Simple, clean menu system
  • Ready-to-use factory programs
  • Adjustable reactivity and discrimination
  • 28-segment Multi-Notch system
  • Excellent target separation in iron and trash
  • Compatible with supported XP DEUS II FMF coils
  • ICON-X adds additional programs and finer adjustments

I have used XP machines for years, and one of the things I really like about the ICON is how quickly you can get to the settings you actually need.

The original DEUS II is an extremely capable detector, but it gives you a tremendous number of adjustments and menu options. That is great for somebody who wants to fine-tune everything, but it can also be intimidating to a newer XP user.

The ICON gives you a much easier menu to navigate, use and set up while retaining the FMF performance that makes XP detectors so good.

How Does the ICON Compare to the DEUS II?

Based on my own hands-on experience, I believe the ICON can run right with the original XP DEUS II in many real-world hunting situations. In some conditions, I would put its actual detecting performance equal to or even better than the DEUS II while being considerably easier for the average person to set up and operate.

The DEUS II still gives an advanced user more adjustments and overall control. But if your priority is finding targets rather than spending time adjusting menus, the ICON gives you an incredible amount of XP performance for the money.

That is why I rank it #2 rather than treating it as simply another “beginner” detector. The regular ICON is one of the least expensive ways I know to get into what I consider genuine top-level detecting performance.

The ICON-X is the better choice if you want more factory programs, additional saved programs, greater reactivity adjustment, finer discrimination control and more room to customize the machine as your experience grows.

3. Nokta Simplex Ultra — Best Lower-Cost Detector for Beginners

The Nokta Simplex Ultra moves to #3 on my list, but that does not mean it has stopped being one of my favorite detectors for somebody trying to get into the hobby inexpensively.

The Simplex Ultra gives you a real, capable metal detector at a price that is still accessible to someone who does not want to spend $500 or more getting started.

It is lightweight, waterproof, easy to understand and has enough features that you can actually learn how discrimination, tones, recovery speed and target ID work instead of buying an overly basic detector that you will quickly outgrow.

Why the Nokta Simplex Ultra Still Makes Sense

  • Excellent choice for a first serious metal detector
  • Very easy to learn
  • Fully waterproof
  • Lightweight carbon-fiber shaft
  • Multiple search modes
  • Notch discrimination
  • Recovery-speed adjustment
  • Bluetooth capability
  • Great for coins, jewelry, relics, parks and fields
  • Excellent value for the money

The biggest difference between the Simplex and the two machines above it is that the Simplex Ultra is a single-frequency detector rather than a simultaneous multi-frequency machine.

That does not mean it cannot find good targets. It absolutely can. But if you know you are going to spend a lot of time on wet salt beaches or you simply want the versatility of simultaneous multi-frequency technology, I would look harder at the Triple Score, ICON or one of the other SMF detectors on this list.

Bart's Take: If keeping the purchase price low is one of your biggest priorities and you still want a detector you can take seriously, the Simplex Ultra remains one of the easiest machines for me to recommend.

4. Minelab Vanquish 560 Pro Pack — Best Affordable Minelab Multi-IQ Package

The Minelab Vanquish 560 Pro Pack earns the #4 position and is an especially good choice for somebody who wants Minelab's proven Multi-IQ® simultaneous multi-frequency technology in an easy-to-operate detector.

Minelab did a good job making the Vanquish 560 capable without turning it into a complicated detector. It provides meaningful control over the detector while keeping the interface relatively straightforward.

Why the Vanquish 560 Pro Pack Makes the List

  • Minelab Multi-IQ® simultaneous multi-frequency technology
  • Fully waterproof to approximately 5 m / 16 ft
  • Two search coils included — V12X and V8X
  • ML60 wireless earbuds included
  • Five target tones
  • Adjustable Iron Bias
  • 30 discrimination segments
  • Park, Field and Beach capability
  • Lightweight, collapsible design
  • Good combination of simple operation and adjustability

The two-coil setup is especially useful. The V12X gives you more ground coverage, while the smaller V8X can make a noticeable difference when working around trash or hunting tighter areas.

I think the Vanquish 560 Pro Pack is particularly appealing for somebody who likes Minelab and wants to get into Multi-IQ without jumping directly into the Equinox or Manticore price range.

Bart's Take: If you are a Minelab person and want Multi-IQ, two useful coils and wireless audio without moving into one of Minelab's higher-priced detectors, the Vanquish 560 Pro Pack makes a lot of sense.

Shop the Minelab Vanquish 560 Pro Pack at Big Boys Hobbies →

5. Nokta Double Score — Affordable Turn-On-and-Go Simultaneous Multi-Frequency

The Nokta Double Score rounds out my top five and deserves more attention than it sometimes gets.

The Double Score is a good middle ground between a basic entry-level detector and the more adjustable Triple Score.

You still get simultaneous multi-frequency technology and waterproof construction, but Nokta keeps the controls straightforward. It is designed for somebody who wants modern multi-frequency performance without having to learn a complicated detector.

Why the Nokta Double Score Is a Great Value

  • Simultaneous Multi-Frequency technology
  • Simple, beginner-friendly operation
  • Waterproof construction
  • Park, Field and Beach search modes
  • Adjustable recovery speed
  • Notch filtering
  • Adjustable iron filtering
  • Excellent choice for somebody who wants SMF at a lower price

Compared with the Triple Score, the Double Score gives up some adjustability, modes and included accessories. But not everybody needs all of those things.

If you want an SMF detector that you can turn on, learn quickly and use in a wide range of conditions without paying for the complete Triple Score Pro Pack, the Double Score is a very strong option.

Bart's Take: The Double Score is one of those detectors that makes sense for somebody who says, “I want simultaneous multi-frequency, but I don't need every adjustment or accessory.” It gives you a lot of the important technology while keeping things simple.

Best Cheap Metal Detectors of 2026 Comparison Chart

Rank Detector My Pick For Why It Stands Out
#1 Nokta Triple Score Pro Pack Best overall package Stable, easy to use, SMF, waterproof, 2 coils and wireless headphones
#2 XP ICON / ICON-X Top-level performance for the money XP FMF performance, extremely lightweight, wireless and much simpler menus
#3 Nokta Simplex Ultra Lower-cost beginners Easy, waterproof, lightweight and loaded with useful features for the price
#4 Minelab Vanquish 560 Pro Pack Affordable Minelab Multi-IQ Multi-IQ, waterproof design, 2 coils and wireless earbuds
#5 Nokta Double Score Simple affordable SMF Turn-on-and-go operation with waterproof simultaneous multi-frequency performance

Which Cheap Metal Detector Should You Buy?

If you want the best all-around package, my first choice is the Nokta Triple Score Pro Pack. You get an easy-to-use and stable SMF detector, two coils and wireless headphones in one package.

If your priority is getting as close as possible to high-end detecting performance without paying high-end detector money, take a serious look at the XP ICON or ICON-X.

If you want to spend less and are just getting started, the Nokta Simplex Ultra remains one of the best first detectors available.

If you prefer Minelab and want Multi-IQ, the Vanquish 560 Pro Pack gives you an excellent combination of technology, two coils and wireless audio.

And if you want simple simultaneous multi-frequency operation at a lower price, the Nokta Double Score deserves a serious look.

Cheap Metal Detectors Are Not Toys Anymore

One thing I tell customers all the time is that you do not have to buy the most expensive detector available to make great finds.

Every detector in this top five is capable of finding coins, jewelry, relics and other valuable targets. Several of them use simultaneous multi-frequency technology that only a few years ago was much more closely associated with higher-priced detectors.

The biggest question is not simply, “Which detector goes deepest?”

You also need to consider:

  • How easy the detector is for you to operate
  • What type of sites you hunt
  • Whether you hunt wet salt beaches
  • How much iron or modern trash is in your sites
  • Whether you want wireless headphones
  • Whether multiple coils are important to you
  • How much menu adjustment you actually want
  • How much you want to spend

A detector that you understand and enjoy using will usually do you more good than an expensive machine with dozens of settings you never learn how to use.

Want More Advanced Performance Later?

You can always move up later if your hunting style eventually demands more adjustment, specialized programs or premium features.

Some of the higher-level detectors I regularly recommend include the Nokta Legend 2, Minelab Equinox 900, XP DEUS II and Minelab Manticore.

But I would not automatically assume you need one of those machines just because it costs more. For a lot of detectorists, one of the five detectors above may do everything they actually need.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cheap Metal Detectors

What is the best cheap metal detector in 2026?

My overall pick for 2026 is the Nokta Triple Score Pro Pack. I like it because it combines stable simultaneous multi-frequency performance, easy operation, waterproof construction, two useful coils and wireless headphones in one package.

What is the best cheap metal detector for a beginner?

If your budget allows it, I would strongly consider the Nokta Triple Score Pro Pack because it is easy enough for a beginner but powerful enough that you are unlikely to outgrow it quickly. If you want to spend less, the Nokta Simplex Ultra is still one of my favorite lower-cost beginner detectors.

What is the best budget detector for high-end performance?

The XP ICON is my pick if performance is your main priority. It brings XP FMF technology and the lightweight wireless XP platform into a much more affordable detector with a menu system that I find considerably easier to navigate than the original DEUS II.

Can the XP ICON really compete with the DEUS II?

In my experience, yes. I believe the ICON can run right with the original XP DEUS II in many normal hunting situations, and there are conditions where I would put its actual detecting performance equal to or better than the DEUS II. The DEUS II still offers considerably more advanced adjustment for users who want maximum control.

What is the easiest simultaneous multi-frequency detector to use?

The Nokta Triple Score and Double Score are both very easy SMF detectors to learn. I rank the Triple Score higher because it adds more control and the Pro Pack includes two coils and wireless headphones while still keeping the detector straightforward to operate.

Is the Nokta Simplex Ultra still worth buying?

Absolutely. The Simplex Ultra is still one of the best options for somebody who wants to keep the price low while buying a waterproof, lightweight detector with enough features to grow into. Just remember that it is a single-frequency detector rather than simultaneous multi-frequency.

Is the Minelab Vanquish 560 Pro Pack good for beaches?

Yes. The Vanquish 560 uses Minelab Multi-IQ simultaneous multi-frequency technology and is waterproof, making it a very capable option for beach hunting as well as parks, fields, yards and other general-purpose detecting.

What is the difference between the Nokta Double Score and Triple Score?

The Double Score is the simpler and less expensive option. The Triple Score gives you more sensitivity adjustment, more recovery-speed choices, additional tones, more user profiles, a Relic search mode and greater overall control. The Triple Score Pro Pack also includes the smaller search coil and wireless headphones.

Are cheap metal detectors actually worth buying?

Yes—as long as you buy the right one. The detectors on this list are legitimate machines capable of finding coins, jewelry, relics and other valuable targets. Modern affordable detectors have gotten so good that price alone no longer tells you how capable a detector is.

Should I buy a cheap detector first or go directly to a high-end detector?

There is no single answer for everybody. If you are new to the hobby, one of these affordable detectors may be all you need for years. If you already know exactly what type of hunting you plan to do and want maximum adjustability, moving directly into something like the Legend 2, DEUS II, Equinox 900 or Manticore may make sense.

Final Thoughts: The Best Cheap Metal Detectors of 2026

Affordable metal detectors have never been this capable.

If I were ranking the machines I would recommend today, my order is:

  1. Nokta Triple Score Pro Pack — Best overall package
  2. XP ICON / ICON-X — Best high-level performance for the money
  3. Nokta Simplex Ultra — Best lower-cost beginner choice
  4. Minelab Vanquish 560 Pro Pack — Best affordable Minelab Multi-IQ package
  5. Nokta Double Score — Best simple affordable SMF option

The Triple Score gets my #1 spot because it is the easiest all-around package to recommend to the widest range of detectorists. It is stable, simple to learn, powerful, waterproof and already includes two coils and wireless headphones.

The XP ICON gets my #2 spot because its performance-to-price ratio is exceptional. If you want XP's lightweight FMF performance and do not want to spend DEUS II money—or deal with as complicated a menu—the ICON deserves a serious look.

The right choice ultimately depends on your budget, where you hunt and how much control you want.

If you are still unsure, call or text me. Tell me where you plan to hunt, what you want to find and approximately what you want to spend. I would rather help you buy the right detector the first time than sell you something you will not be happy with.

Need Help Choosing the Right Metal Detector?

Don't guess and hope you bought the right machine. Call, text or email us before you order. I'll help you compare the options and make sure you get the detector that fits your budget and hunting style.

Minelab Manticore 2D Target ID Map Guide: Coins, Iron and Bottle Caps

The Minelab Manticore’s 2D Target ID Map provides more information than a Target ID number alone. Learn how to interpret target traces, recognize possible iron and bottle caps, identify promising coin signals, and make better digging decisions.

Minelab Manticore 2D Target ID Map showing conductive and ferrous target information

The Minelab Manticore gives detectorists more target information than a conventional Target ID number alone. Its advanced 2D Target ID Map displays both the conductive and ferrous characteristics of a detected object, helping you make a more informed decision before you start digging.

However, the screen is not a magic target-identification system. A silver coin will not always produce a perfect dot, and a bottle cap will not always look exactly the same. Target depth, orientation, soil conditions, nearby iron, sweep direction and detector settings can all change the trace.

The key is learning how to combine the Manticore’s 2D screen, Target ID number, audio response and repeatability. When those pieces begin telling the same story, your confidence in a target can improve dramatically.

What Is the Minelab Manticore 2D Target ID Map?

The Manticore’s 2D Target ID Map plots a detected target according to two basic types of information:

  • Conductivity: Displayed from 0 to 99 across the horizontal portion of the screen.
  • Ferrous characteristics: Displayed vertically to help show whether the target has iron-like properties.

Instead of showing only a Target ID number, the Manticore produces a visible Target Trace. Depending on the target and conditions, that trace may appear as a tight dot, a wider mark, an irregular smear or multiple traces.

This additional information can help you evaluate targets that produce similar Target ID numbers but have very different physical characteristics. For example, a coin and a piece of oddly shaped trash may occasionally fall into a similar conductive range, but their audio response and 2D trace may tell different stories.

That is one reason the Manticore has become such a popular choice among serious coin, jewelry, relic and beach hunters. It does not simply give you another number—it gives you another layer of information to interpret.

How to Read the Manticore 2D Target ID Map

Horizontal Position: Target Conductivity

The horizontal scale runs from 0 to 99. Lower-conductive targets generally appear farther to the left, while higher-conductive targets appear farther to the right.

Lower and middle conductors can include:

  • Small gold jewelry
  • Nickels
  • Thin jewelry
  • Small brass items
  • Buttons
  • Pull tabs and aluminum trash

Higher conductors can include:

  • Copper cents
  • Clad dimes and quarters
  • Silver coins
  • Large brass and copper objects
  • Some larger aluminum targets

Conductivity alone cannot tell you exactly what is under the coil. Gold jewelry, aluminum trash and many desirable relics can overlap. That is why experienced detectorists combine the number with the trace, tone, depth and repeatability.

For examples of common coin, jewelry and relic readings, see our complete Minelab Manticore Target ID List.

Vertical Position: Ferrous Information

The vertical position helps display the target’s ferrous characteristics. Targets with stronger iron-like properties may pull away from the center conductive line and produce traces in the ferrous portions of the display.

The Manticore’s adjustable Ferrous Limits determine how much of those areas are accepted or rejected. These limits can be adjusted to suit the location, target type and amount of iron in the ground.

A target touching or entering a ferrous area is not automatically worthless. Good targets located beside nails, coins on edge, deep targets and oddly shaped relics can produce imperfect traces. Treat the ferrous information as evidence—not an automatic verdict.

Trace Shape and Strength

The shape and intensity of the trace can provide more clues:

  • Tight trace: May indicate a compact, consistent target such as a coin or ring.
  • Wide or smeared trace: May indicate an irregular target, multiple objects or a target affected by nearby iron.
  • Multiple traces: May indicate more than one object under the coil.
  • Weak or faint trace: May be caused by depth, a very small target or a target at the edge of detection.

Important: No trace shape guarantees a particular target. The 2D map is most useful when it agrees with the audio response, Target ID and repeated sweeps from more than one direction.

What Does a Coin Look Like on the Manticore 2D Screen?

A shallow, flat coin in relatively clean ground may produce one of the easiest signals to recognize. You may see a fairly tight trace near the center conductive line, along with a repeatable Target ID and clean audio response.

A promising coin signal will often have several of these characteristics:

  • A compact or reasonably tight Target Trace
  • A repeatable Target ID range
  • Clean audio from more than one sweep direction
  • A response that remains centered as you shorten the sweep
  • A pinpoint response that suggests a compact object

However, do not expect every coin to look perfect. Several conditions can make a good coin produce a less attractive trace.

Why a Good Coin Signal May Look Messy

  • The coin is deep: As signal strength decreases, the trace and Target ID may become less stable.
  • The coin is on edge: Its apparent conductivity and target response can change with sweep direction.
  • Iron is nearby: A nail or other ferrous object can pull or smear part of the trace.
  • There are multiple targets: The screen may attempt to display more than one object.
  • The ground is mineralized: Difficult soil can reduce Target ID accuracy and stability.
  • The sweep is too fast: Fast, wide swings can make closely spaced targets blend together.

When a signal sounds promising but the screen is not perfect, rotate around it and sweep from another direction. A masked coin may become much clearer when the coil crosses the target from a better angle.

How Bottle Caps and Iron May Appear

Bottle caps are some of the most frustrating targets for coin hunters because certain caps can imitate a good conductive signal. Their round shape can make them sound better than ordinary iron, especially when they are rusty, flattened or buried at an angle.

On the Manticore, a bottle cap or irregular iron target may produce:

  • A trace that stretches or smears into a ferrous area
  • A good tone mixed with an iron response
  • A Target ID that jumps more than a typical coin
  • A trace that changes significantly when swept from another direction
  • A wider or less concentrated response than a coin
  • A signal that breaks up when the coil is moved slightly off center

None of those signs proves that the target is trash. A good target next to iron can behave similarly. The goal is to look for a pattern across several pieces of information.

A Practical Bottle-Cap Test

When you suspect a bottle cap, try this process:

  1. Center the target using short, controlled sweeps.
  2. Watch whether the trace stays concentrated or pulls into the ferrous area.
  3. Rotate approximately 90 degrees and sweep again.
  4. Listen for iron or a rough edge around the good tone.
  5. Raise the coil slightly and see whether the response changes unusually.
  6. Consider the location and the likelihood of coins versus modern trash.

In a modern picnic area filled with caps, you may decide to be more selective. At an old homesite where a questionable signal could be a valuable coin or relic beside a nail, it often makes sense to dig more of those imperfect targets.

What Happens When a Coin Is Beside a Nail?

This is where the Manticore’s combination of fast response, detailed audio and the 2D Target ID Map can become especially useful.

When a coin and nail are close together, you may see:

  • Two separate traces
  • A conductive trace with a ferrous smear
  • A good tone mixed with an iron response
  • A Target ID that improves from one direction
  • A signal that becomes clearer with a shorter sweep

Do not reject the target simply because iron appears on the map. You may actually be seeing both objects.

Slow down, shorten your sweep and rotate around the signal. Try to isolate the nonferrous response. A good target may only reveal itself through a small portion of the sweep, particularly in old homesites, nail-filled relic locations and heavily hunted parks.

Coil Choice Can Make a Difference

The standard M11 coil is an excellent all-around option and provides a useful balance of coverage, depth and separation. In dense trash or iron, however, a smaller or narrower coil can make it easier to separate nearby targets.

For many of the parks and iron-filled sites I hunt, I use the Minelab Manticore M9 coil. Its controlled footprint makes it easier to work between nearby targets while maintaining excellent everyday performance.

You can read more about my experience with that setup in Why I Switched to the M9 Coil on My Manticore.

Do Not Hunt Using the Screen Alone

The Manticore’s display is one of its biggest advantages, but your ears still matter. In fact, some of the most valuable targets may not produce textbook Target ID numbers or perfectly shaped traces.

A better dig-or-skip decision considers all of the following:

  • Audio quality: Is there a clean, repeatable nonferrous tone?
  • Target ID: Does the number remain within a reasonable range?
  • 2D trace: Is it tight, smeared, split or pulled toward iron?
  • Repeatability: Does the signal repeat from multiple directions?
  • Target size: Does the response seem coin-sized or unusually large?
  • Depth: Is the weaker response reasonable for the indicated depth?
  • Location: Are you hunting a modern trash area or a historic site where questionable targets deserve investigation?

Bart’s Basic Rule

Use the screen to support what you hear—not to replace it. When the tone, Target ID, trace and repeatability agree, you can dig with more confidence. When they disagree at a historic location, investigate the signal before walking away.

Manticore Settings That Affect the 2D Target Trace

The same buried object can appear differently when you change search modes, sensitivity, recovery speed, discrimination or Ferrous Limits. Understanding these adjustments will help prevent you from treating the screen as an unchanging picture.

Sensitivity

Higher sensitivity can help detect weaker and deeper targets, but running it too high may increase instability, ground noise and unwanted responses. If the screen becomes excessively busy or the detector sounds erratic, lowering sensitivity slightly may provide cleaner information.

Recovery Speed

The Manticore offers recovery-speed adjustments from 0 to 8. Higher settings can help separate closely spaced targets in trash, while lower settings may improve the response on deeper, isolated targets.

There is a trade-off. Running recovery speed too high for the conditions may weaken deeper responses. Running it too low in heavy trash may cause adjacent targets to blend together.

Ferrous Limits

Ferrous Limits determine how the detector classifies and responds to targets in the ferrous portions of the map. More aggressive rejection can quiet an iron-filled site, but it can also make it easier to miss a desirable target that is being influenced by nearby iron.

In difficult locations, avoid copying someone else’s settings without considering your ground, coil, target types and hunting style. Use a starting point, test known targets and make small adjustments.

Search Mode

The Manticore includes modes designed for different environments, including all-terrain, beach and goldfield conditions. Each mode uses settings intended for a particular type of ground and target response.

Use a mode appropriate for the location before making major changes. A setting that works well in a clean field may not be ideal for a trashy park, wet salt sand or iron-filled homesite.

Sweep Speed and Coil Control

Detector settings are only part of the equation. Coil control has a major effect on the information you receive.

  • Keep the coil level throughout the sweep.
  • Avoid lifting it at the end of each swing.
  • Overlap your passes.
  • Shorten the sweep when investigating a target.
  • Slow down in dense trash and iron.
  • Rotate around questionable signals.

The Manticore can process targets quickly, but no detector can properly separate targets if the coil is rushed through a contaminated site without enough control.

Choosing the Right Minelab Manticore Coil

The best Manticore coil depends on the type of ground you cover, the amount of trash and iron present, and whether you value maximum separation, all-around performance or additional ground coverage.

Minelab M8 Coil

The Minelab Manticore M8 8-inch by 5.5-inch DD coil is the smallest Manticore coil. Its narrow footprint is useful in extremely trashy sites, around heavy iron, between rocks and in tight spaces.

The M8 can help isolate targets that may blend together under a larger coil. The trade-off is less ground coverage and potentially less depth on some targets than a larger coil.

Minelab M9 Coil

The Minelab Manticore M9 coil provides an excellent balance of target separation, depth, weight and coverage. It is my preferred everyday Manticore coil for many parks and older locations where trash and iron are common.

It is easier to maneuver than the stock M11 while still covering more ground than the smaller M8. For many hunters, the M9 can be the most versatile optional coil in the Manticore lineup.

Minelab M15 Coil

The Minelab Manticore M15 15-inch by 12-inch DD coil is designed for greater ground coverage and strong performance in more open locations.

It can be a good option for fields, beaches, pasture and other areas where targets are more spread out. The larger size allows you to cover more ground with every sweep, although it may not separate closely spaced targets as easily as the M8 or M9.

Manticore Coil Best Use Main Advantage
M8 Coil Heavy trash, iron and tight spaces Maximum separation and maneuverability
M9 Coil Parks, homesites and everyday detecting Excellent balance of separation, depth and coverage
Standard M11 General-purpose and beach detecting Strong all-around performance
M15 Coil Fields, beaches and open ground Maximum coverage and strong open-ground performance

Quick Manticore 2D Map Reference

What You Notice What It May Mean What to Do Next
Tight trace and repeatable tone Compact, consistent target such as a coin or ring Sweep from another direction and dig if it remains consistent
Trace smears toward a ferrous area Iron, bottle cap or a good target influenced by nearby iron Shorten the sweep and rotate around the target
Two visible traces Two adjacent objects or a complex target Try to isolate each response with controlled sweeps
Faint but repeatable trace Deep, small or edge-of-detection target Check from several angles and consider the location
ID and trace change dramatically by direction Irregular trash, target on edge or multiple nearby targets Pinpoint, shorten the sweep and investigate carefully

Quick Field Checklist Before Skipping a Target

Before walking away from a questionable Manticore signal, run through this checklist:

  1. Sweep the target from at least two directions.
  2. Shorten your sweep and try to isolate the center.
  3. Listen for a repeatable nonferrous tone.
  4. Watch whether the trace remains tight or moves into the ferrous area.
  5. Check whether the Target ID stays within a reasonable range.
  6. Consider whether the target could be deep, tilted or beside iron.
  7. Lower sensitivity slightly if the detector is unstable.
  8. Use the location’s age and history to decide how selective to be.
  9. When in doubt at a promising historic site, dig it.

Is the Manticore’s 2D Target ID Map Worth It?

For detectorists who want more information before digging, the 2D Target ID Map is one of the strongest reasons to choose the Minelab Manticore.

It will not identify every buried object with certainty, and it does require time in the field to understand. However, once you learn how the traces relate to the audio, Target ID and surrounding conditions, the screen can help you:

  • Recognize compact, consistent targets more quickly
  • Notice iron mixed with conductive targets
  • Separate multiple objects under the coil
  • Investigate questionable signals more methodically
  • Reduce some unnecessary digging in modern trash
  • Make better decisions in difficult and heavily hunted locations

The Manticore remains an excellent choice for serious coin, jewelry, relic, field, park and beach hunting. It combines advanced target information with strong depth, fast response, adjustable recovery speed, flexible Ferrous Limits and multiple search modes.

Get the Right Manticore Setup

The best Manticore setup depends on where you hunt. The stock M11 is an excellent all-purpose and beach coil, the M8 excels in extremely tight trash, the M9 is my preferred choice for many parks and iron-filled sites, and the M15 provides additional coverage in open ground.

Minelab Manticore 2D Target ID Map FAQ

What does the Manticore 2D Target ID Map show?

It displays both the conductive and ferrous characteristics of a detected target. Conductivity is shown from 0 to 99 horizontally, while the vertical position provides information about the target’s ferrous characteristics.

What does a good coin look like on the Manticore screen?

A coin in clean ground may produce a relatively tight trace, stable Target ID and repeatable audio response. Deep coins, tilted coins and coins beside iron may produce less consistent traces.

Can the Manticore identify bottle caps?

The 2D map and audio can help identify characteristics commonly associated with bottle caps, such as ferrous smearing or an inconsistent response. However, no detector can identify every bottle cap with complete certainty.

What does a smeared Target Trace mean?

A smeared trace can indicate an irregular object, iron, a bottle cap, multiple nearby targets or a desirable target being affected by adjacent iron. Rotate around the target and use short sweeps before deciding.

Should I dig a target that shows both ferrous and nonferrous information?

Possibly. You may be detecting a good target beside a nail or another piece of iron. At older sites, signals containing both types of information are often worth investigating.

Should I use the Target ID number or the 2D screen?

Use both, along with the audio response, depth, target size and repeatability. No single piece of information should make every digging decision for you.

Does recovery speed affect the 2D Target ID Map?

Yes. Faster recovery speeds can help separate nearby targets in trash, while slower settings may provide a stronger response on deep, isolated targets. The best setting depends on the location.

What is the best Manticore coil for trashy parks?

The M8 coil provides excellent separation in extremely dense trash and tight areas. I prefer the M9 coil for many everyday parks because it provides a strong balance of separation, depth and ground coverage.

Which Manticore coil is best for fields and beaches?

The stock M11 is an excellent general-purpose and beach coil. The larger M15 coil can provide greater coverage in open fields, pastures and beaches where targets are more spread out.

Nokta Legend 2 Best Park Settings for Coins & Relics

Best Nokta Legend 2 Park Settings for Coins, Relics & Old Home Sites

If you are using the Nokta Legend 2 metal detector and want a solid starting point for hunting parks, old home sites, plowed fields, and mountain or rough terrain, these settings are a great place to begin.

The Nokta Legend 2 is already one of the best values in the metal detecting world, but getting the settings dialed in can make a big difference in depth, target ID stability, and overall performance. The settings below are designed for hunters looking for coins, relics, and older targets while keeping the machine stable and easy to use.

Nokta Legend 2 Park Mode Settings

For general coin and relic hunting, especially in parks, fields, and older sites, start with Park Mode. Park Mode gives you a good balance of depth, target separation, and clean target ID response.

Setting Recommended Setting Why It Matters
Sensitivity 28 Runs hot enough for good depth while still staying manageable in most ground conditions.

Why These Nokta Legend 2 Settings Work Well

These settings are built around three main goals: maximum depth, stable signals, and accurate target identification.

1. Better Depth

Running the sensitivity at 28 with M3 Multi Frequency helps the Legend 2 reach deeper targets while still keeping the detector fairly stable. This is especially useful when hunting older parks, fields, home sites, and places where deeper coins or relics may be hiding.

2. Cleaner Audio and More Stable Signals

Recovery Speed 4 and Iron Filter 1 give you a good balance between separation and depth. The machine can still pick through trash and iron, but it does not feel overly restricted. This is important because too much filtering can sometimes cost you good targets.

3. Better Target ID in Tough Ground

The Deep Target Identification setting at 3 helps improve target ID reliability on deeper targets. Combined with FerroCheck, these settings can help you make better dig decisions when hunting in mineralized soil or around iron.

Important Tips Before You Start Detecting

  • Perform a Frequency Shift every time you start detecting to help reduce interference.
  • Ground balance whenever soil conditions change. This is especially important in plowed fields, red dirt, or mineralized ground.
  • Sweep slowly and keep the coil level. A slow, even sweep will help the Legend 2 lock onto deeper and smaller targets.
  • Use M3 Multi Frequency for best depth in most coin and relic hunting situations.
  • Adjust sensitivity if needed. If the detector gets unstable, lower sensitivity a little until it smooths out.

Are These Settings Perfect for Every Location?

No setting is perfect everywhere. Soil conditions, trash levels, iron, EMI, and target depth can all change how your detector behaves. Think of these Nokta Legend 2 Park settings as a strong starting point. From there, make small adjustments based on what the ground is telling you.

If the detector is too noisy, back the sensitivity down a little. If you are in a very trashy park, you may want to experiment with recovery speed. If you are hunting open fields with fewer targets, you may be able to slow down and focus on depth.

Final Thoughts on the Nokta Legend 2

The Nokta Legend 2 is one of the best metal detectors for the money because it gives you serious performance without the high-end price tag. With the right settings, it can be a very capable coin, relic, jewelry, and all-around hunting machine.

At Big Boys Hobbies, we don’t just sell metal detectors — we help you get the right detector and understand how to use it. If you have questions about the Nokta Legend 2, setup tips, package options, or current offers, call, text, chat, or email Bart before ordering. You’ll be glad you did.

XP ICON & ICON-X | XP Deus II Performance at a Lower Price

XP ICON & ICON-X: Big Performance, Serious Modularity, and a Price That Could Shake Up the Market

The new XP ICON and XP ICON-X metal detectors are now available for pre-order at Big Boys Hobbies Metal Detectors. XP has estimated that U.S. dealer deliveries may begin in the first part of July, but as always with new detector releases, that timing is an estimate and not a guaranteed ship date.

The XP ICON and XP ICON-X are new multi-frequency metal detectors from XP designed for lightweight detecting, wireless performance, and serious upgrade potential.

If you have been watching the XP lineup, this one is worth paying attention to. The XP ICON series brings a lot of the technology, performance, and wireless design people love about the XP Deus II, but at a much lower entry price. For a lot of hunters, this may be one of the best values XP has released in years.

Click here to pre-order the XP ICON or ICON-X from Big Boys Hobbies.

XP ICON and ICON-X metal detector compatibility with Deus II coils, HF2 coils, MI-6 pinpointer, wireless headphones, and XP Go Terrain app

Why the XP ICON Has Our Attention

The biggest thing that stands out to us about the XP ICON is the value. You are getting a lightweight, wireless, waterproof, FMF multi-frequency detector from XP at a price point that makes a lot of sense for both newer detectorists and experienced hunters who want a second machine.

No, we are not saying it completely replaces the XP Deus II. The Deus II is still the top dog in the XP lineup for maximum control, advanced settings, and premium performance. But the ICON and ICON-X appear to bring a surprising amount of XP performance to a much lower price point, and that is what makes this detector so interesting.

For the money, this could be one of the strongest performance-per-dollar machines in the XP lineup.

XP ICON Modularity: This Is Where Things Get Really Interesting

One of the biggest advantages of buying into XP is the ecosystem. XP has always been known for lightweight wireless detectors, swappable coils, wireless headphones, and accessories that work together instead of feeling like separate pieces of equipment.

The XP ICON follows that same idea. It is compatible with key XP technologies and accessories, including:

  • XP FMF search coils
  • XP HF2 high-frequency coils
  • XP MI-6 wireless pinpointer
  • XP wireless headphones
  • XP Go Terrain app
  • USB-C software updates

That means the ICON is not just a “buy it, and you’re done” detector. It can grow with you. You can start with the detector package that fits your budget, then build it into a more specialized setup over time.

Compatible With XP Deus II Coils and Accessories

This is a big deal. The XP ICON being compatible with XP Deus II FMF coils makes it much more flexible than a typical entry or mid-level detector. If you already own a Deus II, or if you plan to upgrade into more XP equipment later, the ICON gives you a path to share coils and accessories across the XP platform.

That is where the long-term value comes in. You are not buying into a closed-off detector with limited upgrade potential. You are buying into the XP wireless ecosystem.

For customers who already own an XP Deus II, the ICON could make a lot of sense as a backup machine, travel detector, loaner machine, or lightweight setup for quick hunts.

Pair the XP ICON With the HF2 Coil, and It Could Be a Game-Changer

One setup we are especially excited about is the XP ICON paired with the optional XP Deus II 9.5" x 5" HF2 Elliptical Coil.

That high-frequency elliptical coil is built for separation, sensitivity, and working in iron or trashy ground. If you hunt old home sites, iron patches, cellar holes, pounded parks, or areas where good targets are hiding close to junk, this is the kind of coil that can really wake a detector up.

With the ICON’s lightweight wireless design and XP’s FMF technology, adding the HF2 coil could turn this into a very serious unmasking setup. That is why we think this detector has a chance to surprise a lot of people once it gets into the hands of real hunters.

Performance Close to Deus II for a Lot Less Money?

The XP Deus II is still XP’s flagship detector, and it gives you more advanced controls and more total capability. But the ICON and ICON-X look like they may deliver a lot of that XP performance feel at a much lower price.

That matters because not every customer wants to spend flagship money right out of the gate. Some people want a lightweight, waterproof, multi-frequency detector that performs well, is simple enough to learn, and can still be upgraded with better coils and accessories later.

That is exactly why the XP ICON has our attention.

ICON vs. ICON-X: Which One Should You Choose?

The standard XP ICON is the simpler version and should be a great fit for hunters who want XP performance without getting too deep into advanced settings.

The XP ICON-X gives you more control, more audio options, more reactivity options, and more custom program flexibility. If you are an experienced detectorist, or you like fine-tuning your machine for different sites, the ICON-X is probably the one you will want to look at first.

Either way, both models are designed around XP’s lightweight wireless platform and FMF multi-frequency technology.

XP Deus II FE Cheat Code Settings for the 9.5" HF2 Coil

XP Deus II “FE Cheat Code” Settings for the 9.5" HF2 Coil

If you run an XP Deus II with the 9.5" x 5" HF2 elliptical high-frequency coil, there is a simple setup being talked about by XP users that many are calling the “FE Cheat Code.” This setup is designed for hunters looking for better performance in iron, trashy sites, and difficult ground where target separation matters. Credit XP expert Merrill.

The idea behind this setup is simple: use the Deus II’s fast processing, high-frequency capability, and iron-handling tools to help pull good targets out of areas where other detectors may struggle.

XP Deus II FE Cheat Code Settings

  • Program: Fast Program
  • Max Frequency: 89 kHz
  • Tones: Full Tones
  • Multi-Processing: Morph 2
  • Ground Balance: Do a Ground Grab

Why This XP Deus II Setup Works So Well

The XP Deus II is already known for being one of the best metal detectors for iron, trash, and target separation. But when you pair it with the XP Deus II 9.5" x 5" HF2 elliptical search coil, the machine becomes even more specialized for picking through tough sites.

The smaller elliptical design helps you work between trash, nails, and tight targets, while the high-frequency capability gives the detector excellent sensitivity to smaller and lower-conductive targets. That makes this coil a strong choice for relic hunting, old home sites, iron patches, gold jewelry, small coins, and difficult ground conditions.

Fast Program: Built for Target Separation

The Fast Program is a great starting point when hunting in iron or trash because it is designed for quick response and recovery speed. In places where multiple targets are close together, a slower program can smear or blend signals together. The Fast Program helps the Deus II respond quickly, so you have a better chance of hearing a good target hiding next to junk.

This is one of the main reasons the “FE Cheat Code” setup makes sense with the HF2 coil. The coil is already built for precision, and the Fast Program helps take advantage of that.

89 kHz Max Frequency: Extreme Sensitivity With the HF2 Coil

Running the XP Deus II up to 89 kHz with the HF2 coil gives the detector a serious advantage on small targets. Higher frequencies are especially useful when you are looking for tiny conductors, thin coins, small relics, small gold, and targets that may not hit as hard at lower frequencies.

This is where the XP 9.5" HF2 coil really shines. If you already own a Deus II and want to make it better in trashy or iron-infested sites, this coil is one of the best upgrades you can make.

Full Tones: Hear More Target Information

Using Full Tones gives you more audio information about what is under the coil. Instead of relying on only a few tone breaks, Full Tones lets the Deus II communicate subtle differences in target response.

For experienced Deus II users, Full Tones can make a big difference. You can start hearing the “shape” of the target better, especially when good targets are mixed in with iron or other trash. This is not always the easiest audio mode for beginners, but once you get used to it, it can be extremely powerful.

Morph 2 Multi-Processing: A Key Part of the Cheat Code

The video setup also uses Multi-Processing: Morph 2. This setting can help fine-tune how the Deus II handles signal processing and target audio. When paired with the Fast Program, Full Tones, and the HF2 coil, Morph 2 can help make the detector feel more responsive and informative in tough hunting conditions.

In simple terms, the goal is to make good targets stand out better without losing the speed and separation that makes the Deus II so popular.

Don’t Skip the Ground Grab

One of the most important parts of this setup is also one of the easiest to overlook: do a Ground Grab.

Ground balancing helps the detector adjust to the soil conditions where you are hunting. This matters even more when running high frequencies, because mineralized ground can affect stability and performance. Before you start judging targets, take a moment to ground balance the detector properly.

Best Coil for This XP Deus II Cheat Code Setup

This setup is built around the XP Deus II Elliptical HF2 Search Coil — 9.5" x 5". This coil is a favorite for hunters who want better separation, better control in iron, and better sensitivity to smaller targets.

If you already own an XP Deus II, adding the HF2 coil can completely change how the machine performs in difficult sites. It is especially useful in:

  • Old home sites with nails and iron
  • Trashy parks
  • Relic hunting sites
  • Gold jewelry hunting
  • Small coin hunting
  • Areas where larger coils struggle with target separation

Want the Best XP Deus II Setup Already Built?

If you do not already own the Deus II or you want what we consider one of the best current XP Deus II packages, take a look at our XP Deus II Gold HF2 with WSA ST Stereo Headphones setup.

This package gives you the Deus II platform with the 9.5" HF2 coil already included, along with the new WSA ST stereo headphones. For hunters who want a serious Deus II setup for iron, trash, gold, relics, and small targets, this is one of the strongest combinations XP offers right now.

Watch the XP ICON and ICON-X Video

This XP video shows more information about the new ICON platform, available packages, accessories, and the key differences between the XP ICON and XP ICON-X.

What Is the XP ICON?

The XP ICON metal detector is a new lightweight, fully wireless, multi-frequency detector made in France by XP Metal Detectors. It is built for detectorists who want powerful performance without overcomplicated controls.

The ICON series uses FMF® Fast Multi Frequency technology, allowing the detector to operate with simultaneous multi-frequency detection. That gives users better versatility across different ground conditions, target types, and hunting environments.

The ICON is aimed at users who want a simple, fast, lightweight XP detector. The ICON-X is the more advanced version, offering additional control, more programs, more reactivity settings, finer discrimination adjustment, and an extra 28 kHz mono frequency.

XP ICON vs ICON-X: What Is the Difference?

Because both models may be sold from the same product page, it is important to understand the difference between the XP ICON and the XP ICON-X before choosing your setup.

Feature XP ICON XP ICON-X
Best For Simple, easy, lightweight XP performance More control, precision, and adjustability
Mono Frequencies 4 kHz and 14 kHz 4 kHz, 14 kHz, and 28 kHz
Audio Settings 3 audio settings 6 audio settings
Reactivity 5 levels: 1 to 5 7 levels: 0 to 6
Discrimination Resolution 1-point resolution 0.5-point resolution
Programs 3 factory programs + 3 custom slots 6 factory programs + 6 custom slots

Quick recommendation: Choose the XP ICON if you want the easiest and simplest setup. Choose the XP ICON-X if you want more control, more adjustability, and the better long-term choice for experienced hunters.

Key Features of the XP ICON Series

  • FMF® Fast Multi Frequency Technology for versatile detection across different ground conditions
  • Fully wireless design with wireless remote, coil, and headphones
  • Waterproof to 5 meters / approximately 16 feet
  • Ultra lightweight build for long hunts and comfortable use
  • Compatible with Deus II FMF coils
  • Advanced XP audio with PWM, Square audio, and stereo audio morphing
  • Multiple tone options, including Pitch, 2 tones, 3 tones, 5 tones, and Full Tones
  • XP Go Terrain App support for recording finds and tracking routes
  • Fast startup — power on, choose your program, and start detecting
  • Upgradeable XP ecosystem with coils, headphones, pinpointer, and accessories

FMF Fast Multi Frequency Technology

One of the biggest features of the XP ICON range is FMF® Fast Multi Frequency technology. Instead of relying on only one frequency at a time, the ICON platform is designed to use simultaneous multi-frequency detection for better performance across different sites.

This matters because coin hunting, beach hunting, relic hunting, and jewelry hunting do not all require the same type of response. FMF helps the detector handle a wider range of targets and ground conditions, including wet sand, mineralized soil, and mixed hunting environments.

For users who want XP multi-frequency performance in a lighter and more simplified package, the XP ICON and ICON-X are going to be very interesting machines to watch.

Fully Wireless XP Design

XP has always been known for lightweight wireless detector technology, and the ICON series continues that approach. The remote, coil, and compatible headphones communicate wirelessly using XP’s digital protocol, giving the user freedom of movement and a clean, modern detecting setup.

This is not just about convenience. A properly balanced, lightweight, wireless detector can make a major difference during long hunts. Less weight and less cable clutter means less fatigue and more time swinging.

Ultra Lightweight for Long Hunts

The XP ICON and ICON-X are built for comfort. XP lists the ICON at approximately 843g / 1.858 lbs fully equipped with the remote, while the ICON-X is approximately 830g / 1.829 lbs fully equipped with the remote.

That lightweight design makes the ICON range a strong choice for long hunts in parks, fields, beaches, woods, and old home sites where comfort matters.

Waterproof to 5 Meters

The XP ICON series is rated IP68 waterproof and waterproof to 5 meters / approximately 16 feet. That makes it a good option for wet sand, rain, mud, creeks, shallow water, and beach hunting.

For underwater use, XP’s optional bone conduction headset is required. That is important because standard wireless headphones do not transmit properly underwater.

Advanced XP Audio Options

Audio is a major part of the XP detecting experience, and the ICON range includes several useful audio options. The ICON series supports PWM and Square audio, along with stereo audio morphing.

Available tone options include:

  • Pitch
  • 2 tones
  • 3 tones
  • 5 tones
  • Full Tones

Good audio helps detectorists better understand what is under the coil. In trashy parks, iron-loaded sites, and older locations, better audio response can help users make smarter dig decisions.

XP Go Terrain App Compatibility

The ICON range is also compatible with the XP Go Terrain App. This allows users to record finds, track detecting routes, and use smartphone GPS features while hunting.

For detectorists who like to document productive areas, revisit locations, or keep better records of their hunts, app support is a useful addition.

The ICON is a smart choice for beginners, casual users, and detectorists who want XP technology without needing the extra settings of the ICON-X.

Who Should Buy the XP ICON-X?

The XP ICON-X is the better choice for users who want more control. It adds more frequency options, more audio settings, more reactivity levels, finer discrimination resolution, and more program slots.

For experienced detectorists, the ICON-X will likely be the preferred model because it gives you more room to fine-tune the machine for different sites.

Bart’s Take: The regular XP ICON looks like a great option for someone wanting simple, lightweight XP performance. The XP ICON-X is the model I would watch closely if you want the most adjustability, especially with the added 28 kHz mono frequency, more programs, more reactivity control, and finer discrimination.

Is the XP ICON Replacing the Deus II?

No. The XP Deus II remains XP’s flagship metal detector. The ICON and ICON-X appear to fit into the XP lineup as a more affordable and simplified option while still offering many key XP advantages: FMF technology, wireless design, waterproof construction, stereo audio, lightweight handling, and ecosystem compatibility.

For detectorists who want the most advanced XP machine, the Deus II is still the top option. For users wanting a simpler and more affordable way into the XP wireless FMF platform, the XP ICON and ICON-X metal detectors may be a very strong choice.

Why We (Almost) Always Pick the Minelab Manticore | Big Boys Hobbies

Why We (Almost) Always Pick the Minelab Manticore

Minelab Manticore metal detector at Big Boys Hobbies

If someone asks us what premium metal detector we recommend most often for serious all-around hunting, our answer is usually the Minelab Manticore.

We say almost always because no detector is perfect for every single person, budget, or site. But if you want top-end performance, excellent depth, strong target separation, accurate Target ID, and one of the best all-around detector platforms on the market today, the Manticore is usually the one we would pick first.

At Big Boys Hobbies, we talk to detectorists every day who want one machine that can handle parks, fields, relic sites, old home places, and beaches without feeling like they are giving something up. That is exactly why the Manticore keeps rising to the top.

Before You Buy a Minelab Manticore, Talk to Bart First

ATTENTION: Don’t buy your Minelab Manticore until you’ve spoken with us first — you’ll be glad you did.

When you contact Big Boys Hobbies, you speak directly with Bart — no call centers, no random order desk, just real detector help from someone who knows the machine.

Call/Text: 405-206-9010  |  Email: Bart@BigBoysHobbies.net

Why the Minelab Manticore Stands Out

The Manticore is Minelab’s flagship-level coin and treasure detector, and for good reason. It combines raw power with advanced target information, strong iron handling, and the kind of stability serious hunters want when they are trying to pull keepers out of difficult sites.

On paper, the Manticore already checks a lot of boxes:

  • Advanced Multi-IQ+ technology
  • 2D Target ID Map
  • Fast target separation
  • Strong ferrous rejection
  • IP68 waterproof design
  • Lightweight collapsible carbon fiber shaft
  • Upgradeable software
  • Preset and custom search modes for different site conditions

But what really matters is how it performs in the field. That is where the Manticore earns its reputation.

It Has the Performance to Match the Hype

A lot of detectors sound great in marketing copy. The Manticore is one of the few that consistently backs it up in real-world hunting.

It has the depth serious detectorists want, but it also has the speed and target separation needed to work through modern trash, old iron, and heavily hunted ground. The 2D Target ID Map gives more visual target information than many machines on the market, and the overall platform has proven to be stable even in tougher EMI environments.

That matters because a detector is not just about raw depth. It is about how much useful information it gives you, how well it handles junk, and how confident you feel deciding whether to dig or move on. The Manticore does a great job on all three.

If you are looking at buying one, you can see the full detector setup here: Minelab Manticore at Big Boys Hobbies.

Why We Run the Manticore With the M9 Coil Almost Exclusively

Here is the real-world part that matters most to us: while the Manticore comes with the stock M11 coil, we run ours with the Minelab Manticore M9 coil almost exclusively.

Why? Because for the kind of hunting we care about most, the M9 is just flat-out better.

The M9 is a 9-inch elliptical Double-D waterproof coil, and in our opinion it is the sweet spot for the Manticore platform. It makes the detector feel lighter, improves maneuverability, and really shines in the kinds of places where good targets are hiding close to iron and modern trash.

That is why we like it so much for trashy parks, older public sites, nail-heavy spots, and worked-out areas where separation matters more than just swinging a bigger coil.

If that sounds like the type of ground you hunt most, take a look at the Minelab Manticore M9 coil here.

Why We Like the M9 More Than the Stock M11 for Everyday Hunting

The stock M11 is a versatile coil, and it is a good one. But if we are heading out to actually hunt the kinds of sites most people spend their time on, the M9 gets the nod almost every time.

That is because the M9 gives us a combination we really value:

  • Better handling in trashy ground
  • Easier separation around iron and adjacent targets
  • A lighter, better-balanced feel during long hunts
  • Excellent everyday versatility without feeling oversized
  • Very strong performance in the real-world sites we hunt most

If you mainly hunt wide-open clean fields, there may be times when a larger coil makes sense. But for the average serious detectorist hunting old parks, tear-outs, home sites, schools, and mixed-condition ground, the M9 is incredibly hard to beat.

Why the Manticore Is So Hard to Beat in Trashy Ground

One of the biggest reasons we almost always pick the Manticore is how well it performs in difficult, contaminated ground.

Old parks, iron-infested sites, and heavily hunted places can make many detectors feel smeared, uncertain, or slow. The Manticore does a very good job of letting desirable non-ferrous targets stand out better, especially when paired with the M9 coil.

If your goal is to pull keepers from sites that have already been pounded, target separation matters. The Manticore is one of the best detectors out there for exactly that kind of work, and the M9 makes it even more dangerous in the right hands.

It Is Also a Beast on the Beach

The Manticore is not just an inland coin and relic detector. It is also one of the best premium beach machines on the market.

Its waterproof design and strong multi-frequency performance make it a serious option for dry sand, wet salt sand, and shallow water. So if you want one detector that can handle inland sites and beach hunting at a very high level, the Minelab Manticore is one of the best choices available.

It Is Powerful Without Feeling Bulky

Another reason we recommend the Manticore so often is that it offers premium performance without feeling like a heavy, clunky detector. It is lightweight, collapsible, and well thought out for long hunts.

Minelab also packed it with features serious detectorists actually use, including a color display, backlit keypad, vibration, wireless headphone capability, built-in speaker, and upgradeable software.

In other words, it is not just powerful. It is refined.

Why Buy Your Manticore From Big Boys Hobbies?

When you buy from Big Boys Hobbies, you are not dealing with a random drop-ship site or a customer service rep reading from a script. When you call or email us, you talk directly with Bart.

That means real help before the sale and real support after the sale.

  • In-stock inventory
  • Free shipping
  • No sales tax outside Oklahoma
  • Free lifetime support
  • Direct access to Bart
  • Real-world detector experience
  • Exclusive bundle options and quality add-ons

If you are spending premium money on a detector, it makes sense to buy from a dealer that will actually help you get premium performance out of it.

Our Favorite Manticore Setup

If you want the setup we personally prefer, start with the Minelab Manticore and add the M9 coil.

That is the combination we almost always reach for when hunting trashy parks, iron-heavy sites, and other real-world locations where separation matters most.

Questions? Call/Text 405-206-9010 or email Bart@BigBoysHobbies.net

Final Thoughts

There are a lot of very good detectors on the market right now. But when people ask us which premium detector we would choose most often for real-world use, the Minelab Manticore keeps coming out on top.

It has the depth, speed, separation, target ID, versatility, and overall performance serious detectorists are looking for. And when you pair it with the M9 coil, we think it becomes an even stronger setup for the kinds of sites most people actually hunt.

That is why we almost always pick the Manticore.

If you have questions about whether the Manticore is the right fit for your hunting style, or whether you should go with the stock setup or add the M9, contact Bart directly before you buy.

If you hunt trashy parks, old home sites, or iron-infested ground, target separation can matter just as much as raw depth. In a recent head-to-head comparison from Calabash Digger Adventures, the Nokta Legend 2 with its 5x8 coil was tested against the Minelab Manticore with an 8-inch coil on deep silver coins surrounded by iron. The results were eye-opening.

While the Manticore remains one of the top flagship detectors on the market, this test suggests the Legend 2 can be extremely competitive in trashy conditions. On several challenged targets, the Legend 2 appeared to deliver cleaner responses and stronger unmasking, showing why it is quickly becoming a favorite for detectorists who want serious performance without spending flagship-level money.

If you have been wondering whether the Legend 2 is truly ready to compete with higher-priced machines, this comparison is exactly the kind of real-world test worth paying attention to.

Why This Test Matters

A lot of detector comparison tests happen in relatively clean ground. Real-world hunting is different. Old coins are often mixed with square nails, modern trash, rusty iron, and all the junk that makes good targets easy to miss.

That is what makes this test useful. Instead of showing performance in easy conditions, it focuses on one of the toughest situations detectorists face: deep silver coins in iron-contaminated ground.

According to the test, these were some of the key buried targets used in the comparison:

  • 12-inch deep USA silver half dollar
  • 10-inch deep USA silver quarter
  • 9-inch deep 1800s USA half dime
  • Silver dime buried with a square nail

That last one is where things got especially interesting. In the iron-heavy setup, the Legend 2 appeared to provide a cleaner high-conductor response in M2 mode, while the Manticore needed a mode change to improve the signal.

What the Test Suggests About the Legend 2

The Nokta Legend 2 is not just a lower-priced alternative. In the right conditions, it looks like a detector that can genuinely challenge more expensive machines.

In this comparison, the smaller 5x8 coil helped the Legend 2 work through the iron and isolate deep silver targets with surprising clarity. That matters because smaller coils are often preferred in dense trash, where separation and unmasking become more important than covering ground quickly.

The test also highlights something many detectorists are starting to notice: the Legend 2 has become a much more refined machine with strong target ID behavior, improved trash handling, and the kind of performance that makes it a serious option for coin, relic, and jewelry hunters alike.

Why the Legend 2 Makes So Much Sense for Trashy Sites

If your main goal is finding good targets in difficult ground, the Legend 2 makes a strong case for itself.

  • Small coil advantage: Great for working through nails, iron, and tight target spacing
  • Strong multi-frequency performance: Helps maintain stability and usable target information in tough sites
  • 0–99 Target ID: Gives more target resolution for evaluating signals
  • Improved FerroCheck and updated features: Helpful for sorting through junk and iron contamination
  • Lightweight and waterproof: Easy to use in a wide range of hunting environments
  • Excellent value: Delivers serious performance without flagship pricing

For detectorists who hunt parks, homesites, cellar holes, fields, and even the beach, the Legend 2 looks like one of the most versatile detector choices available right now.

Is the Manticore Still a Great Detector?

Absolutely. The Minelab Manticore is still one of the best high-end detectors on the market. It offers premium technology, excellent depth, and a strong reputation among serious detectorists.

But what this comparison shows is that the Nokta Legend 2 deserves much more respect in the conversation. In trashy conditions where target separation matters most, it can be much more competitive than many people would expect.

For some buyers, that may make the Legend 2 the smarter overall choice.
