The XP 9-inch FMF search coil is the lightest of XP’s three standard round and large-format FMF coils. Its compact 22.5 cm design provides excellent control in locations where iron, modern trash, roots, rocks and structural obstacles make a larger coil difficult to use.

At approximately 345 grams, it is 125 grams lighter than the 11-inch FMF coil. That weight reduction is noticeable during long hunts and makes an already-light XP detector feel especially quick and easy to maneuver.

Why Choose the XP 9-Inch FMF Coil?

A smaller coil sees less ground under each sweep. In difficult sites, that can be a major advantage. Fewer targets enter the detection field at the same time, helping the operator investigate desirable responses positioned near iron, aluminum trash or other unwanted targets.

Precise Target Separation A compact detection field helps work around nails and closely spaced targets in iron-contaminated locations.
Lightweight Handling The 345-gram coil reduces front-end weight for long hunts, uneven terrain and repeated pinpointing.
Easy Maneuverability Search between roots, rocks, crop rows, playground equipment and remains of old structures.
Full FMF Capability Smaller physical size does not remove XP’s Fast and simultaneous Multi Frequency technology.
Bart’s Take

The 9-inch FMF is the coil I would choose for an old home site, cellar hole, iron-filled relic location or trashy park. The 11-inch covers more ground, but the 9-inch is easier to place exactly where you want it and makes the detector feel exceptionally light.

Best Hunting Conditions for the 9-Inch Coil

  • Iron-filled home sites: Work between square nails, rusty hardware and remains of older structures.
  • Cellar holes and foundations: Maneuver around rocks, roots, brush and uneven ground.
  • Trashed parks: Investigate targets positioned close to pull tabs, bottle caps and other modern debris.
  • Woods and overgrown locations: Fit the coil between vegetation and obstacles that restrict a larger sweep.
  • Playgrounds: Search near metal supports and equipment where a larger coil can overload or become difficult to position.
  • Long detecting sessions: Reduce weight at the end of the stem for better comfort and control.

FMF Multi-Frequency Performance

XP’s FMF technology operates multiple frequencies simultaneously, helping compatible detectors respond to a broad range of target conductivities while adapting to changing soil and beach conditions.

With an XP DEUS II controller, the D22FMF provides access to 49 selectable frequency choices across approximately 4–45 kHz. Available individual frequencies, programs and adjustments depend on the detector and controller paired with the coil.

Does a Smaller Coil Lose Depth?

A larger coil may provide an advantage on certain deeper targets in clean, open ground. However, maximum theoretical depth is not the only consideration. In locations containing dense iron or modern trash, the 9-inch coil’s smaller detection field can make a desirable target easier to isolate and recognize.

Site conditions matter. For open fields and beaches with widely scattered targets, the 11-inch or 13-inch × 11-inch coil covers more ground per sweep. For tight or target-dense locations, the additional control of the 9-inch coil can be more valuable.

Compare XP’s Standard FMF Coil Sizes

FMF Coil Approximate Weight Primary Advantage Best-Suited Locations
9-Inch Round 345 g Separation, control and low weight Iron, trash, woods, foundations and tight spaces
11-Inch Round 470 g Balanced all-around performance Parks, fields, beaches and mixed locations
13-Inch × 11-Inch 570 g Maximum coverage in open terrain Large fields, pastures, beaches and low-trash ground

Including a separate lower stem makes coil changes more convenient because you can leave each coil mounted to its own lower shaft instead of repeatedly removing and reinstalling the coil hardware.

DEUS II, ICON and ICON-X Compatibility

The D22FMF was developed for the XP DEUS II. XP now states that its ICON and ICON-X detectors support the DEUS II FMF coil ecosystem. The programs, individual-frequency choices, expected runtime and waterproof limits available to the coil depend on the complete detector system.

ICON and ICON-X owners: Contact Bart before purchasing the D22FMF so we can confirm your lower-stem and detector configuration. The coil itself carries a 20-meter waterproof rating, but ICON and ICON-X systems are rated to a shallower maximum depth.

XP 9-Inch FMF Coil Frequently Asked Questions

What is the correct weight of the XP 9-inch FMF coil?

XP lists the 9-inch D22FMF coil at approximately 345 grams, or about 12.2 ounces.

Does the 9-inch coil include a lower stem?

Yes. XP supplies the coil with its protective cover, lower stem and mounting hardware.

Is the 9-inch coil only useful in iron?

No. Its size also works well in woods, rocky terrain, playgrounds, trashy parks and any location where low weight and precise coil placement are valuable.

Is the 9-inch coil better than the 11-inch coil?

The 9-inch coil is lighter and generally easier to maneuver around iron, trash and obstacles. The 11-inch coil covers more ground and is usually the more balanced choice for open or mixed hunting locations.

How long does the coil battery last?

XP rates it for up to approximately 20 hours. Runtime varies according to the detector, operating program, selected frequencies, temperature and battery condition.

Can the XP 9-inch FMF coil be submerged?

The coil is waterproof to approximately 20 meters or 66 feet. Underwater detecting also requires the appropriate antenna, controller and waterproof audio equipment, and the complete system must remain within its own depth rating.
