The XP HF2 9.5-inch × 5-inch elliptical FMF search coil is a specialized coil for detectorists who want greater sensitivity to small and low-conductive targets while maintaining precise control in iron, mineralized soil and physically restricted locations.
Its narrow 24 × 13 cm shape fits between rocks, roots, brush, stubble and structural obstacles. With an XP DEUS II, its exceptionally broad high-frequency range makes it especially useful for small natural gold, thin jewelry, tiny relics and desirable targets positioned close to iron.
What Makes the XP HF2 Coil Different?
The HF2 is not simply a smaller version of XP’s standard round FMF coils. It combines a narrow elliptical shape with frequency ranges extending considerably higher than the standard 9-inch, 11-inch and 13-inch × 11-inch FMF coils.
Three DEUS II FMF Frequency Ranges
The DEUS II uses the FREQ MAX setting to provide quick access to three principal HF2 multi-frequency ranges:
- 9–27 kHz: The lower HF2 range for broader target sizes and more general searching.
- 17–53 kHz: A middle range offering increased response to smaller and lower-conductive targets.
- 17–90 kHz: The highest multi-frequency range for extremely small targets and difficult mineralized conditions.
Each range provides seven frequency shifts, creating 21 multi-frequency choices. DEUS II mono-frequency operation supplies 49 choices covering approximately 9–120 kHz.
The highest frequency is not automatically the best choice for every target. Higher frequencies generally emphasize smaller and lower-conductive objects, while lower ranges can be more practical when searching for larger coins and relics or when additional stability is needed.
Best Uses for the XP HF2 Elliptical Coil
- Natural-gold prospecting: Search for very small nuggets in mineralized soil and rocky terrain.
- Iron-filled relic sites: Investigate nonferrous responses positioned close to nails and corroded iron.
- Thin jewelry: Improve sensitivity to small earrings, fine chains and thin gold items.
- Cellar holes and old foundations: Maneuver around rocks, roots, walls, brush and structural debris.
- Crop fields and stubble: Fit the narrow coil between rows and cut vegetation.
- Heavy modern trash: Reduce the amount of ground and number of targets entering the detection field simultaneously.
- Mineralized locations: Use the HF2’s range and compact footprint to work difficult ground carefully.
HF2 vs Standard XP FMF Coils
| XP Coil | Weight | Frequency Capability with DEUS II | Primary Strength |
|---|---|---|---|
| HF2 9.5" × 5" | 350 g | FMF to 90 kHz Mono to 120 kHz |
Tiny targets, natural gold, mineralized soil, iron and tight terrain |
| 9-Inch Round FMF | 345 g | Approximately 4–45 kHz | Lightweight separation with more general-purpose coverage |
| 11-Inch Round FMF | 470 g | Approximately 4–45 kHz | Balanced coverage, depth and everyday versatility |
| 13-Inch × 11-Inch FMF | 570 g | Approximately 4–45 kHz | Maximum coverage in open fields, pastures and beaches |
The HF2 and standard 9-inch FMF coil weigh almost the same. The principal difference is not weight—it is shape, frequency range and intended use. The round 9-inch FMF coil offers more general-purpose coverage, while the HF2 specializes in small targets, mineralized ground and narrow spaces.

DEUS II Software Requirements
HF2 compatibility was introduced with XP DEUS II software version 3.0. We recommend updating the remote, WS6 module and compatible wireless headphones to XP’s latest stable software before pairing the coil.
Important: The remote control and wireless headphones must be on compatible matching software versions. Components running different versions may not communicate correctly.
Save your custom programs or settings before updating because a software update may reset certain stored configurations.
ICON and ICON-X Compatibility
XP officially includes the HF2 within the compatible ICON and ICON-X accessory ecosystem. However, the controller determines the available programs, frequency selections, settings and system waterproof rating.
The DEUS II frequency figures on this page should not be interpreted as an assurance that every identical frequency selection will appear on an ICON or ICON-X controller. Contact Bart if you need confirmation for a specific detector configuration.
Underwater Use
The HF2 coil is waterproof to approximately 20 meters or 66 feet. The waterproof rating of the complete detector is determined by every component being used, including the controller and headphones.
DEUS II underwater operation requires the proper XP underwater antenna and compatible waterproof audio equipment. ICON and ICON-X systems have a shallower overall system rating than the HF2 coil itself.

XP HF2 Frequently Asked Questions
Is the HF2 better than the standard 9-inch FMF coil?
It depends on the location and target. The HF2 specializes in very small targets, mineralized soil, dense iron and narrow terrain. The round 9-inch FMF coil provides more general-purpose coverage and a lower frequency range for mixed detecting.
Is the HF2 lighter than the standard 9-inch FMF coil?
No. Their weights are almost identical. XP lists the HF2 at approximately 350 grams and the round 9-inch FMF coil at approximately 345 grams.
Is the HF2 a good coil for natural-gold prospecting?
Yes. Its high-frequency range, narrow shape and sensitivity to very small low-conductive targets make it particularly well suited to small-gold prospecting in mineralized ground.
Does the HF2 include a carbon-fiber lower stem?
Yes. The package includes the carbon-fiber lower stem, protective cover and mounting hardware.
How long does the HF2 battery last?
XP rates it for approximately 10 hours depending on the operating frequency, transmission power, settings, battery condition and temperature.
Can the HF2 be used on saltwater beaches?
Yes. The HF2 can be used in suitable multi-frequency beach programs. Its narrow shape is useful around rocks and difficult shoreline terrain, although a larger round coil covers open sand faster.
Does the HF2 work with ICON and ICON-X?
Yes. XP includes the HF2 within the compatible ICON and ICON-X ecosystem. Available settings and frequencies are determined by the detector controller being used.
